The decision
On November 6, 2024, Evolus reported third-quarter results and described an expanding product portfolio. The company had begun an early-experience program in Europe for its newly approved hyaluronic-acid (HA) gels, while its U.S. applications for two of those products remained under FDA review. Management had already announced the broad launch sequence: a full European launch in the second half of 2025, with European learnings intended to inform the U.S. launch; Evolysse Form and Smooth were expected to launch in the United States by September 2025, subject to FDA approval. Later U.S. launches were planned for Sculpt in 2026 and Lips in 2027. These are company plans and expectations, not completed outcomes. [P1, lines 1218–1220; P2, lines 8–20, 34, 49–58]
This is a hypothetical classroom assignment set immediately after the cutoff. Public disclosures do not show that Evolus faced a particular board vote, internal budget conflict, or binding choice between the announced European and U.S. sequence. The sequence is fixed for this exercise. Your task is to advise how the company should use incremental commercial and launch-preparation resources within that sequence, what evidence should govern any expansion or redirection, and what operating measures should be protected for Jeuveau.
Decision question: Given the announced product sequence and the information available on November 6, what evidence gates and incremental resource-allocation approach should Evolus use for the European experience program and U.S. Evolysse preparation while sustaining Jeuveau?
Assignment: Prepare a two-page recommendation memo for Evolus leadership. Choose one of the three approaches below, state the evidence you would require before increasing or redirecting effort, and identify the strongest argument against your recommendation. You may propose qualitative gates; any numerical threshold or resource amount must be labeled as your classroom assumption. Do not invent a company budget or forecast.
Company and product context
Evolus sells Jeuveau, a prescription botulinum toxin product for aesthetic use, and is building a second product family, Evolysse. In Europe the family is marketed as Estyme. Evolus reported European approval in October 2024 for four HA gels: Form, Smooth, Sculpt, and Lips. As of September 30, Jeuveau was the company's sole approved and commercially available product; the Q3 release attributed revenue growth primarily to higher Jeuveau volume. Evolus relies on Daewoong as its exclusive Jeuveau supplier and on Symatese for Evolysse supply. [P1, lines 145–153, 1218–1220, 1359–1379, 1931–1948; P2, lines 38–39]
The company's third-quarter 2024 revenue was $61.1 million, up 22% from $50.0 million a year earlier; the release attributed the increase primarily to higher Jeuveau volume. Evolus reported a GAAP operating loss of $15.5 million and non-GAAP operating loss of $6.7 million. The non-GAAP measure excludes specified expenses and is not a cash-flow measure. [P2, lines 38–44, 71–83]
At September 30, Evolus reported $85.035 million in cash and cash equivalents. It had used $22.807 million of cash in operating activities in the first nine months of 2024. The company also reported $125 million of Pharmakon loan principal ($121.208 million carrying value); the loan bears interest at SOFR plus 8.5%, with principal amortization scheduled to begin in March 2026. Management said available resources were expected to meet requirements for at least 12 months, based on assumptions that could prove wrong. Cash, debt, operating cash use, and management's estimate describe different things; the disclosures do not establish a discretionary launch budget or a liquidity crisis. [P1, lines 169–175, 332–388, 443–447, 882–924, 1436–1439, 1471–1475]
The European commercial agreement includes milestone payments and minimum-purchase conditions. The filing describes a €1.2 million milestone tied to the second anniversary of certain approvals and a €1.9 million milestone tied to an earlier specified anniversary or a European revenue condition; the minimum-purchase requirements are conditional. These contract terms are not an estimate of optional experience-program spending. [P1, lines 706–709, 1001–1003]
Competitive and category context
Jeuveau competes in a physician-administered neuromodulator category where familiarity, clinical evidence, price, service, and established products may matter. In a 2018 Evolus-sponsored head-to-head trial, Jeuveau met a prespecified noninferiority margin versus Botox on a specific Day-30 glabellar-line investigator endpoint. The trial did not establish superiority or commercial adoption. [P4, trial Results and Table 2; see also P1, lines 1644–1649]
AbbVie reported Botox Cosmetic net revenue of $671 million in Q3 2024, up 8.2% reported and 9.9% at constant currency. It reported Juvederm Collection net revenue of $258 million, down 19.7% reported and 16.9% at constant currency. AbbVie attributed Botox growth primarily to favorable pricing; its explanation for Juvederm's decline emphasized lower international consumer demand. These are AbbVie-reported product results and explanations, not a direct forecast for Evolus. AbbVie's scale, geography, portfolio, and reporting scope differ materially. [P6, lines 1374–1384, 1408–1414, 1496–1497]
Galderma reported first-nine-month 2024 global Injectable Aesthetics net sales of $1.698 billion, including $926 million in neuromodulators and $772 million in fillers and biostimulators. Reported growth was 9.4%, 9.7%, and 9.1%, respectively; constant-currency growth was 10.6%, 10.4%, and 10.9%. These global category figures are not Europe-only, Estyme-specific, or market-share estimates. [P7, release lines 90–97 and appendix lines 153–170]
As of the cutoff, Revance's latest reported quarter was Q2 2024: the company reported $28.7 million of DAXXIFY net revenue and described growth in ordering accounts and units. DAXXIFY is a neuromodulator, not an HA filler. Those company-reported figures are not directly comparable with Evolus revenue or evidence of Estyme demand. [P8, Q2 release, paragraphs 6–20, 23–25, 37–55]
Three approaches for the classroom
The options below are teaching constructs, not company proposals or disclosed internal alternatives. Each keeps the announced launch sequence in place.
| Approach | Incremental resource posture | Main trade-off | Evidence still needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Protect readiness in parallel | Add launch-preparation attention to both Europe and U.S. readiness while continuing Jeuveau execution. Use the early European program to gather feedback, but do not make U.S. preparation depend on a broad European readout. | May protect timing and readiness if approval or launch windows are tight; could commit effort before useful evidence accumulates. | Which preparations are reversible? What staffing, supply, country and regulatory dependencies are critical? What European signals are informative early enough? |
| B. Gate incremental effort on evidence | Continue the announced work, but stage additional European commercial effort and U.S. launch preparation against proposed evidence reviews. Define what must be learned and what Jeuveau service or financial guardrails should hold. | Can connect learning to resource commitments; poorly chosen gates could delay useful preparation or mistake noisy early signals for durable adoption. | What data can be collected from the experience program? How representative are participating clinicians? What readiness can proceed without a launch commitment? |
| C. Limit incremental filler effort | Keep required and already-announced work moving, but constrain additional filler-related commercial commitments until more regulatory and early-use evidence is available; prioritize continuity in the Jeuveau business. | Preserves flexibility under uncertainty; may reduce learning or leave less time to build market readiness. | What is the opportunity cost of slower learning? Which obligations are contractual versus discretionary? What minimum preparation is necessary to preserve the disclosed sequence? |
The case provides no product-level margin, country pricing or volumes, Estyme program budget, clinician cohort or reorder data, launch staffing plan, approval probability, or measured cost of delaying preparation. Do not infer a numerical return or an optimal spending amount from the company or competitor figures.
Discussion questions
- Which approach would you recommend, and what specific evidence would cause you to expand, pause, or redirect incremental effort?
- What can Jeuveau's reported performance, the clinical trial, and competitor disclosures tell you about Evolus's position? What can they not establish?
- Which operating, regulatory, commercial, and financial measures should leadership review together? Separate disclosed facts from your assumptions.

Author cutoff and evidence note
The cutoff includes the Evolus Q3 release and Form 10-Q, both public on November 6, 2024; the SEC accepted the Form 10-Q at 4:37:29 p.m. ET. The 4:30 p.m. earnings call is not used because its completion and public availability by 6:00 p.m. are not established. Later regulatory outcomes and launches are excluded. All dollar figures are USD unless stated otherwise; competitor reported and constant-currency growth are distinguished. Management explanations and forecasts are attributed. The teaching note is a separate private document and is not part of this case.
